CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Keith Kogane

CHARACTER
NAME: Garrett Hawke
CANON: Dragon Age
CANON POINT: during Here Lies the Abyss
AGE: 36
BACKGROUND: wiki

Hawke is a malleable protagonist, so here are some choices that were made in his game:
Carver dead
Bethany a Grey Warden
Sided with the mages
Spared Anders
Romanced Fenris

PERSONALITY:

Whether Hawke likes it or not, he is the Champion of Kirkwall, and that means a great deal to the people of Thedas. Though his main focus initially lies on his immediate circle and what’s best for them, people can’t quite resist coming to him with all of their problems and Hawke doesn’t squander his influence by failing to do anything about it. He begins his journey as an everyman thrust into a situation he wants no part of, but (very gradually) accepts that things in Kirkwall are fucked and that he has a responsibility to try and un-fuck them.

One of Hawke’s most notable traits is his sheer inability to take anything seriously. He turns everything into a joke, even when it’s wildly inappropriate; an oft-talked-about example is when the Viscount is mourning the death of his son, and Hawke’s words of comfort are literally ‘well, it can’t get any worse, it’s late’.He balks away from any kind of serious discussion and when things wander toward an emotional place he will immediately steer them back into an area he can understand. He flip-flops between goofy jokes and blistering sarcasm, and getting an honest answer out of him can be an exercise in futility-- and while he’s effortlessly charming and can talk his way out of any situation, his sharp tongue does get him in trouble from time to time.

As mentioned before, Hawke uses humor and sarcasm to deflect from serious subjects that might force him to open up emotionally. When Aveline presses him to talk about his grief over his dead mother, Hawke replies with ‘I have a smile on my face’, insisting he’s doing fine even though she can see right through him. He can come across as rather cold, particularly when other people are opening up to him, because he can’t quite relate to anyone else’s emotional openness and fights his awkwardness with attempts at humor. He tends to be frustratingly casual about everything, but when his buttons are pressed enough he can be brutally sarcastic and cutting.

Hawke has a tendency to burden himself with blame when bad things happen. His mother can probably be credited as the source of this one; right from the beginning she blames Hawke for his brother’s death and puts an overwhelming amount of responsibility on him in general. After the death of his father Hawke was expected to protect the household, his mother and his siblings, and he regards their losses as a personal failure. He blames himself for Anders’ actions as well, in particular his inability to dissuade his friend from his extreme actions. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, Hawke states that he assumes responsibility for Corypheus’ awakening, and if certain choices are made he will sacrifice himself to defeat the Elder One’s fear demon.

Hawke possesses a strong sense of justice despite his flippant attitude, and shows as much by standing up for the downtrodden--particularly elves and mages, oppressed groups in the game’s narrative--and generally treating authority figures as jokes. He doesn’t seem to have a set code so much as he does what he feels is right at the time, which makes him a rather unpredictable and chaotic individual. Whether that makes him anything like a traditional hero is...debatable, but with a little embellishing from Varric, Hawke has become the stuff of legends anyway.

POWERS/ABILITIES: This Hawke is a Warrior class, so he’s exceptionally strong and resilient and a skilled close-range fighter. He uses two-handed weapons in battle, with a preference for really big axes. Hawke is also blessed with charisma and the ability to lie and talk his way out of any situation. He’s effortlessly charming, and has a way about him that reassures people and puts them at ease.

INVENTORY: Hawke will bring his two-handed axe, a vial each of healing and stamina potion, a small portrait of his family, his casual clothes (a red tunic and pants combo, he’ll be wearing his armor) and his mabari hound Remy.

[ Welcome to the Hanged Man, an establishment made by and for the simpler folks of Eudio. In the style of an Irish pub, it's a small and merry place, with nothing but ale and hard liquor and not a single television screen to be found. Drink as much as you can get down your gullet (passed out customers will be left on the floor and walked over), play card games, enjoy the occasional bard performance and get away from the modern world for a while. Bar fights not actively encouraged but not frowned upon. ]

GARRETT HAWKE (36)
Champion of Kirkwall. Slayer of rampaging Qunari. Only one in Kirkwall (though he suspects all of Thedas at this point) not completely insane. Devastatingly handsome with a fantastic sense of humor. Do you like dogs? You'd better. It's mandatory.
